BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder Review

Spread the love

I’ve been using the BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder to supplement my workout regimen over the past week, this is my review.

This vegan protein powder is 100% organic and is derived from 100% natural non-GMO plant sources. No soy, no dairy, no gluten.

For each 33 gram serving, it packs in 21 grams of protein or 63%. This might not seem that high if you’re familiar with whey protein powders that are 80% protein-per-serving or higher.

However, considering that one of the other top-selling vegan protein powders on the market only has 45% or 21 grams of protein in a 46-gram serving, the BN Labs powder is an efficient way to get protein.

This vegan protein powder is a blend of organic pea protein, organic brown rice protein, and organic pumpkin protein. And if you’re a vegan you’ll be happy to know this powder is a complete, amino-acid rich protein source.

It also blends pretty well too.

I purchased the chocolate flavor to add variety to all of the vanilla powders I’ve been ingesting. It tastes pretty good and is derived from organic cocoa powder, organic coconut sugar, organic stevia extract, and monk fruit extract.

In this review, I’ll take a closer look at the ingredients, taste, and mixability of the BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder.

BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder

BN Labs, also known as Better Nutrition, is actually an offshoot of the world-renowned nutraceutical company British Biologics.

They have decades of experience in the supplement industry and are known for their quality products.

You can read my recent review of the BN Labs Grass-Fed Whey Protein here.

I was curious about BN Labs’ other products after testing and reviewing their quality whey protein powder.

The decision to buy and test out their vegan protein powder was a no-brainer.

After doing a cursory nutrition label check on the back and comparing it to the other popular vegan powders on the market, the BN Labs vegan protein powder is in the upper-tier when it comes to protein-per-scoop.

It’s not the cheapest vegan protein powder, but when you take into account its high percentage of protein compared to other powders, it brings the price-per-gram of protein into the same ballpark.

At the time of this writing, the price-per-gram of protein for this powder is 7.9 cents. This is in the higher range for vegan protein powders, which range from around 6 cents to 9 cents per gram of protein.

You need to watch labels closely, however, as some companies will have only just some organic ingredients in their powder.

This vegan powder from BN Labs is all organic ingredients, save for the monk fruit extract.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients in this vegan protein powder.

Ingredients of BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder

Here are all of the important ingredients of the BN Labs Protein Powder.

  • Organic Protein Blend (Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Pumpkin Protein)

This protein blend contains a blend of organic pea, brown rice, and pumpkin proteins to deliver a full amino acid profile.

It has been shown that it takes 36 grams of rice protein to provide the same amount of the key muscle-building amino acid leucine as 24 grams of whey protein.

Two scoops of this protein powder will have you well on your way to building muscle in your workouts.

  • Organic Flax Seed

Flaxseed is a natural source of omegas and a rich source of lignans.

  • Organic Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder has many proven health benefits such as increased metabolism and a healthy gut.

  • Organic Coconut Sugar

Coconut sugar is low on the glycemic index and is unrefined with less fructose than other sugars.

  • Organic Flavor

Not quite sure what this means, but it’s organic, so that’s nice.

  • Organic Guar Gum

Used as a thickening agent, not many health benefits other than this is organic.

  • Organic Stevia Extract

A natural sweetener that’s helpful in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels.

Nutritional Facts

Here are all the macronutrients and other important nutrients in this vegan powder. There are 27 servings in the 2lb package.

Each 33-gram scoop contains the following:

  • 130 calories
  • 21 grams of protein
  • 4 grams of total fat
  • 4 grams of total carbohydrate
  • 1 gram of total sugars
  • 0 grams of cholesterol
  • 410 milligrams sodium
  • 50 milligrams of calcium
  • 2 milligrams of iron (10% of daily total)

Another benefit of this vegan protein powder is that there’s no cholesterol. If you’re watching your cholesterol this makes a difference.

Many whey protein powders have 15% and more of your daily cholesterol in one serving.

Taste and Mixability of BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder

As I noted before, I purchased the chocolate-flavored version of this product. It tastes like chocolate. It doesn’t have any weird aftertaste like some powders and the texture isn’t chalky.

Another thing I’m happy with is it doesn’t give me any digestion problems. I was a little concerned the pea protein would cause some gas and bloating, but so far nothing has occurred.

I usually mix my powders with just water and it tastes fine this way. The mixability is good. In an immersion blender, it works great.

I also went old school and used a fork to mix it and it still mixes up surprisingly well, albeit a little thick.

Pros and Cons

Here’s what I like and don’t like about this protein powder.

Pros

  • All organic ingredients. It’s a very pure form of vegan protein with no fillers
  • High-percentage of protein per scoop
  • Not a ton of carbs so very keto-friendly if that’s your thing
  • I digested it well
  • Taste is good
  • Mixes well
  • No cholesterol
  • It’s low on the glycemic index

Cons

  • It’s on the higher end of the price range for vegan powders, but you’re not paying for any extra crap.
  • The bag doesn’t seal the best, I might transfer the powder to a container.
  • An amino acid profile on the bag would be nice.

Verdict

This is a very high-quality vegan protein and the price reflects that. It has all organic ingredients even down to the innocuous ones like guar gum, so for those of you that value purity, this powder has it.

Once you get down to it and compare its protein-per-scoop price to other vegan powders, the BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder compares favorably.

Couple this with the fact it is low in carbs and sugars, this is one of the more pure protein vegan proteins you’ll find.

Here’s a quick protein comparison for you (cost of a gram of protein):

  • BN Labs Vegan Protein Powder- 7.9 cents
  • Orgain Organic Protein Powder – 7.1 cents
  • Garden of Life Plant-Based Powder- 7 cents
  • KOS Plant Protein Powder – 7.33 cents

It is a tad bit higher, but I’ll put the ingredients in this vegan protein powder up against any of those for quality.

I rate this powder a buy at its current price due to its quality ingredients and high protein per scoop.

If you’re looking for a pure vegan protein source, you won’t find much better.
